NDIS Social and Community Participation in Melbourne

Social and Community Participation support is about helping you take part in everyday community life in a way that feels meaningful to you. That may mean meeting friends, joining a group activity, attending a class, enjoying a hobby, going to local events or learning new social and recreational skills.

At uCare iCare, we recognise that every participant has different interests, abilities and goals. Our role is to listen first, then support you to build a practical plan for doing more of the things that matter to you.

What Social and Community Activities Can Include

Activities can be simple, active, creative or skill-building. Depending on your goals and support needs, this may include:

  • Visiting friends and family

  • Going shopping, to a museum, the movies or a concert

  • Joining hobbies such as art, dance, singing, quilting or other creative classes

  • Taking part in sport or recreation such as tennis, basketball, surfing, bike riding, skiing or kayaking where appropriate

  • Trying wellbeing activities such as meditation or yoga

  • Exploring local community centres, events and group programs

  • Learning skills that support independence, confidence and connection

Support Built Around Your Interests

You should not have to fit into a program that does not suit you. We work with you to understand what you enjoy, what you want to try and what support would make participation easier.

Your plan may include one-to-one community access, centre-based activities, small group opportunities or a combination of supports. The focus is to help you feel comfortable, included and connected.

How uCare iCare Can Help

Our team can support you to plan activities, travel to suitable locations, communicate with others, participate safely and build confidence over time. We can also help identify activities that align with your NDIS goals and personal interests.

Support may include encouragement, prompting, personal assistance, transport planning, social coaching and help engaging with community venues or activity providers.

NDIS Funding for Social and Community Participation

Social and Community Participation may be funded through Core Supports for assistance with social and community participation or through Capacity Building Supports for increased social and community participation.

Funding arrangements are different for every participant. Whether a support is available will depend on your NDIS plan, your goals, your circumstances and whether the support is considered reasonable and necessary.

If you are unsure what your plan includes, you may wish to speak with your support coordinator, plan manager, NDIS planner or the NDIA. Our team can also discuss the type of support you are looking for and explain what information may be needed before services begin.

Choice, Control and Confidence

Social participation works best when you have choice over the activities you join and the goals you want to pursue. We respect your preferences, communication style, cultural needs, routine and comfort level.

You can choose activities that interest you, decline activities that do not, and adjust your plan as your confidence, skills or goals change.
